Hello Band Families,

I’ll need a response for this possible new event.

I saw a social media post about Frank Ticheli, a retiring professor from the USC Thornton School of Music and composer of some of our best current band music, and saw that he will be conducting one of his best pieces called “Blue Shades.” I searched a little more and found that we might be able to get free tickets that are normally $22-$42. I got 50 free tickets!

The concert will be Sunday, January 29 at 3:00pm. If we have enough people respond by tomorrow I’ll do what I can to get a bus. If it’s a few people that don’t mind driving then that might be the best course financially.

Please let me know if you’d like your student to go and if you would chaperone (go with) them as parents or family.

Here’s some information from the Lone Star Wind Orchestra:

1. Prior to the concert, please review concert etiquette rules with your students (students should stay seated during the concert, no phones during the concert, when it's appropriate to applaud, etc). Also, please have your students complete this pre-assessment. (Note: Please do not prep your students for these questions. We just want to gauge what they may know prior to the concert. Students will take a post-assessment after the concert to see what if any knowledge they gained from attending the concert.) https://form.jotform.com/230037538798163

2. Please arrive at the Eisemann Center (2351 Performance Dr, Richardson, TX 75082) between 1:45 and 2:00 PM.

3. Please have buses park according to the attached map upon dropping off you and your students.

4. You will be met in the lobby by a LSWO Volunteer when you arrive who will show you and your students to your seats between 2:15 and 2:30 PM (doors to the hall will not open until that time). Please make sure your students have used the restrooms prior to getting seated. The Volunteer will give you a paper with a few QR codes. One of the QR codes will be for the Playbill, one for a link to the post-assessment questions and the third for a link to a Concert Review for the students to complete after the concert (Both the post-assessment & the concert reviews will be due on February 3rd, but might be best to complete right after the concert). Please scan the QR code for the Playbill prior to the concert and open the link in your browser.

I’ll have more information soon if you’re interested.

Here’s an incredible recording of Blue Shades that has an incredible piano solo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNUui99aSNc

Here’s a recording of the band Rhapsody in Blue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VH7nBKs9LM

I’m looking forward to hearing the new symphony “Blue Marble” by one of the most famous female composers of this time.

Thank you all,

David DeSoto
